girl about town.

dear you,
yesterday was a total girly dream day.
i did all the usual morning stuff.
i've started copying texts from the bible in a little notebook i have, and i've found i really enjoy it.
it's kinda become my new devotional routine.
worship :)
i like to listen to my ipod at the same time because it drowns everything else out, except the words i'm writing.
basically anything by jon foreman makes me really want to worship and praise the amazing god who brought me to to this beautiful country.
i copied psalm 139 today, which is gorgeous.
if you've never read it, you should.
anyways, during breakfast, goma said she was going out to downtown patan to do some shopping.
i'm not sure if she invited me or if i invited myself, cuz it was kinda confusing, but i ended up going with her!
it was fun to walk along the big streets that lila has driven me around on.
it's totally different to walk them rather than see them go by through a window.
we first went to a jewelry shop because she was looking for something religious or something.
i'm not sure.
they didn't have it, tho, so we kept walking until we got to a narrow street with hundred of little shops.
she went to every metalworks shop, where there were a lot, and finally found these little trident things and some special pots that lord shiva has.
there were beautiful pots everywhere, big and small alike.

i've decided that i really like texture.
landscape pictures are cool and things like that, but i really enjoy close up pictures of things with cool textures.
like the wooden background on this blog and these metal pots.
surprisingly, my ipod took a pretty good picture of these pots.
anyways, we kept walking until we found one of many sari/kurta shops (kurta is the shorter dress with pants)
goma wanted to buy a sari for the wedding we're going to this sunday (another one!)
there were so many beautiful colors and beading and details.
it's crazy.
we should do this in our culture!
i helped goma pick out a light pink one with gorgeous yellow and white beading/sequin designs.
and we made the seller guy lower his price by 2,200 rupees.
which is really only about $30, but it sounds wayyy cooler in rupees :)

i'm so tempted to get one, but i would have nowhere to wear it without making a spectacle of myself.
we sat in the shop for awhile as goma bartered, and then we continued down the road.
the end of the road came out at durbar square, where sudha took me a couple days ago.
it really is a beautiful place.
we kept going to different shops, getting goma odds and ends that she wanted.
then we went to another fabric/ladies outfit shop.
and goma bought me a kurta top!
i was going to pay for it, but she insisted, and kinda got mad at me when i tried to pay her back!
i thought it was going to be expensive like the sari she bought, but it was only 900 rupees.
basically 12 dollars!
i don't have it yet because the lady is taking it in and putting 3/4 sheer sleeves on it.
i can tell you about it tho:
it's a dark midnight blue and has an almost mandarin collar with a v-neck, if that makes sense.
it has gold and black embroidery all over the front and the edges are wrapped in gold thread.
it's mid-thigh, with the usual slits up the sides to the waist.
i really like it and it's just what i wanted.
i didn't want the really long kurtas that most ladies wear, and i didn't want the pants, so this is perfect!
i hope it turns out ok with the tailoring.
oh!
speaking of clothes, sudha lent me another beautiful outfit to wear to the upcoming wedding!
it's aqua blue with bazillions of sparkly things.
it has sheer long-sleeves and matching legging/pant things.
ok ok.
sorry to any guys, if there are any, who are reading this :P
anyways, goma seemed tired of shopping so we hired a taxi to take us to a little restaurant her friend runs!
is this day just extravagant, or is it extravagant! :)
TAXI!
i prayed the entire time i was eating, because goma ordered me chicken momos, and im so afraid of getting sick.
so i slowly ate them, hoping that i wouldn't suddenly implode or something.
they tasted pretty good, so if i'm going to die, at least it wasn't from eating something disgusting tasting :P
we walked back home, and a couple minutes later, i went out with debaki to buy bread and milk from the nearby shops.
and i saw an advertisment with a guy that totally looks like phileas fogg from 'around the world in 80 days' :D
if you've never seen that movie, i highly recommend it because it's hilarious!
watch it with friends, and you'll be sure to laugh until you cry :)
debaki went inside, but i went to the field next to the house and watched some of the boys from the orphanage play soccer.
they were very friendly, which made me feel good about my decision to take the initiative and get over my shyness.
they kept asking me questions about canada, tho, which is bad because i don't know that much about canada...
i should just say i'm from america next time someone asks where i live.
they were very interested in the fact that my brother's name is satish and he's from india.
anyways, it was really cool to just be with the kids, even if they were paying attention to the game.
i could tell a bunch of them were talking about me because they kept saying my name and looking at me then looking back at the group and giggling and stuff.
ohmygoodness!
one kid came up to me and asked me what my favorite sport was and he did that bashful kicking the ground with one foot and looking around thing!
it was so adorable lol even if he was like 12
i stayed until it was dark out, and then i went in for supper.
it was sorta american food with mashed potatoes and broccoli
and an egg :P
after dinner i did AWESOME at bejeweled.
but i've since been told that my score is nothing to be proud of.
but you can eat you heart out, dave!
i also watched a video of the christmas program the kids put on last christmas.
it was pretty cool, with lots of songs (singing along with songs) and dances.
one that really made me laugh was 2 little kids trying to breakdance to a rap song!
one of them could walk around on his hands for a long time, which was pretty impressive, but they kept trying to spin on their heads, which didn't work out as well as i'm sure they hoped :P
it was still really cool, and debaki kept squealing when one of her dances came up.
WHEW!
sorry this post is so long, it's just that yesterday was such an awesome day!
so happy :D
here's to wishing every day to be that good!
love,
me
